Barrie is regarded as one of the foremost energy and environmental experts in the northeast, having been appointed as one of only three regional managers for the Carbon Trust in 2003. Prior to joining the Carbon Trust he held various senior roles during his 30 years with Northern Electric which included Managing the Research & Technology Centre and company Environmental Manager.
Barrie has considerable experience in electrical power engineering, energy use and energy management in both the commercial and manufacturing sectors. He trained as an Electrical Engineer with Northern Electric PLC and gained an HNC in Electrical Power Engineering, degree in Physics and a post graduate diploma in Advanced Experimental Physics.
During the 1980's and 90's Barrie joined the team providing support to Industrial Manufacturing Companies to improve resource management through efficient energy utilisation. His work involved the provision of technical advice and producing feasibility studies across a wide range of technologies.
Latterly during his employment at Northern Electric he became head of the Environmental Dept being responsible for legislative and regulatory issues affecting the company together with advising businesses on energy management and energy use.
Barrie left North Electric in 2001 to become one of the first Regional Managers for the Carbon Trust. He became responsible for delivering the Carbon Trust's Energy Efficiency programme in the North East (previously known as the UK Energy Efficiency Best Practise Programme).
Barrie left the Carbon Trust in 2007 and now works with Square One to assist clients develop a complete business energy solution.
